Anjum
Singh
Anjum Singh inherited painting from both her parents and
pursues it like a vocation.Trained at Santiniketan, Rabindranath
Tagore's art school in West Bengal, Anjum Singh's paintings are
a manifestation of her fascination with bright reds, oranges, yellows
and pinks that are seen to dominate her canvasses, with an occasional
stroke of gold or brown. So abiding is her fascination for colours
that she first decides on the colors she will use for a particular
painting, and take it from there. She usually restricts herself
to pure colours finding the adding of black or white contaminating.
Daughter of artists Arpita and Paramjit Singh, Anjum says her style
has been influenced by that of her mother from whom she has "
imbibed a little bit of my mother's ideas and forms." Her initial
training at Santiniketan made sure that she was formally well-equipped
to paint. This foundation was further solidified at Delhi University
where she completed her Masters degree in Fine Arts, before going
on to the Corcoran School of Art, Washington DC, in 1992 to learn
painting and printmaking. It was in America that she became more
open to experimentation and developed her own signature style. Anjum
Singh lives and works in New Delhi.

location throughout the world. During the past two years Doug has
been developing a collection illustrating the christrian orthodox
monasteries of Mount Athos in Greece and the Saint Catherine's monastry

Jayasri
Burman
The
imagery in Jayasri Burman's work has a dream-like and lyrical quality
with a unique sensitivity which, although inspired by the Indian
folk element, retains a quality of refreshing candour and reflective
honesty, that is as original as it is endearing. She manages very
successfully to weave the decorative and design element of the folk
idiom into the intricate patterns of her canvas, without losing
the natural charm and naivete of her work, which is uniquely her
own.
Her
concern for women is also evident in her work. Without calling herself
feminist, she confesses her desire to see her women content in partaking
in the bounties of life. Free, and at one with Nature, her woman
is sometimes a coronated ceremonial bird, and at others, a mother
Goddess or a creature of the woods.
Jayasri's
closeness to Nature is also reflected her in works. She can reinterpret
the lush green environs, the hybridized imagery of a woman who is
more bird-like in her grace and form, the stagnant pools that bring
out the flamed colours of "Basant" (spring),
in her paintings. Jayasri's latest oeuvre reveals an unconscious
suspended energy that can find its parallel in the environs of Santiniketan,
where she studied. If she expressed a tranquil sanguine feel in
the images she reflected two years ago, this time her vehicle of
expression is the dance of colour.
It
is not wrong to presume that Jayasri has gained a grace in her works,
one that comes from the evolution of her maturity and her own contentment
with life as it is. What she has gained then is born out of the
opportunity to respond to the varied aspects of Indian culture-
this then is a new world of Nature that has inspired the artist
to cast her eye upon the paint.
One
can also find here, the selection of certain key colours - red,
blue or the radiant saffron - provides as a starting point and guide
for content, colour and structure. The works are a commitment to
an art that is derived from the experience of the landscape - it
is more than a matter of seeing things afresh - it is the perception
that is aware of the transience and mutability of landscape. She
establishes an intimate space, like a secret garden, and invites
the viewer to partake of it. Once you step into Jayasri's fictional
world, you can look around and respond immediately to the unorthodox
canons of beauty and partake of the choreography of Nature

K
Murlidharan
If
one denies his roots, he misses a lot of values in his works of
art although the quest for sources of inspiration and its vitality
is not confined to the artist’s own background. But for me,
the subject of mythology has been evergreen in my memory and it
has formed a constant source of inspiration of my creative work.
I try to form a fusion of mythological interpretation and reduce
them to simple and straight forms so that I can visualize, and more
importantly make sure that I have no pretensions of propagating
any religious message through these visuals. I see the ancient myths
and attempt to portray their meanings, I derive, their impact on
me, without inhibitions.

Manisha
Parekh
A
New Delhi based artist, Manisha Parekh has studied painting at the
M.S. University, Baroda, as well as at the Royal College of Art
in London. Having well known painters -Manu and Madhavi Parekh -
for parents, she grew up with paints and brush around her. She has
emerged as one of the significant young Indian artists, whether
it's for her skillfully executed graphics of articles of daily use,
or her more ambitious works in the area of conceptual, site-specific
installations. The main thrust of Manisha's style has always been
that of clear, scientific structure. Parekh has always shown a marked
preference for black and white, which allows her to concentrate
on form over color. She has a continuing fascination with vessels,
and breathes life into inanimate objects, which themselves take
on connotations of the human body. In her series 'Hairy Letters',
she has used rice paper, glue drawings and gouaches, exploring textures
rather than tones. Her earlier rugged brushwork has gradually evolved
into loose strokes, and the handling of figures in her work in now
done "to relax muscular as well as pictorial tension,"
as she says.
Parekh
has exhibited extensively in India, London and Germany. She also
taught at Baroda and then joined the Kanoria Centre for Arts in
Ahmedabad. In 1990, she was awarded a fellowship by the Kanoria

MashKoor
Raza
Mashkoor
Raza is an established signature in Figurative Abstract, Non-representational
Abstract and Calligraphy. Creating transparency with parts of basic
forms of square, circles and triangles on his canvases, and abstract
images of women and horse, he shows versatility of handling his
subject, paints, and composition. Shapes of triangles, squares and
rectangle emerge softly and silently in their assigned areas. He
defines the space not through linear demarcation but through variation,
creating shades in the given color scheme. His achievement of translucency
creates a kind of delicacy and highlights poetic qualities. Mashkoor
Raza is based in Pakistan.

Meena
Deora (b 1960)
Her
oil paintings are evocative of the indestructibility of Time as
a fourth and un-apprehended dimension. Acrobatic male figures, reminiscent
of mythical heroes in their perfection of line and movement, completing
the unending cyclic journey of Life ad Death in an intangible medium
that of time,a mesh, a tunnel of movement unable to control their
direction. Meena's work has undergone an interesting evolution from
the more abstract and patterened to the figurative.Meena has had
several group shows. Her exhibitions include 'KALEIDOSCOPE' an exhibition
of the contemporary Indian art by ISU in Singapore, '100 years of
Sanyal' an exhibition by Anjoli Ela Menon at Mati Ghar in Indira
Gandhi Centre for Arts, New Delhi. Her works can be seen in the
